New Poipu Beach Casual Dining

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

Where to go to grab a quick bite?  Fortunately, all of these new casual dining options are located in Kukuiula Village Shopping Center, about a five minute drive from Hideaway Cove.  Just follow Poipu Road to the traffic circle and you can’t miss the Village.

Bubbas Burgers-808-7452-6900.  What a pleasant surprise to see Bubbas open a new third location (their other two are in Kapaa and the original in Hanalei) here in Poipu.  What’s even more surprising is they’ve maintained their low prices in spite of being located in a pretty high end center.  Their sign says they “Cheat tourists and attorneys”, which gives you an idea of the irreverent vibe here.  Great burgers and fries.

Dolphin SushiDolphin Sushi and Fish Market-808-742-1414.  This is also the second location for this iconic restaurant from Hanalei.  The Dolphin has an excellent reputation for quality fish and this outpost will continue in the same tradition. Sushi is inherently expensive if premium, fresh fish is served.  If you’re looking for one of those sushi restaurants where the fish is on little plates on a conveyer belt, you can find that at the Kukui Grove Shopping Center.  This is definitely not mass produced sushi.  The fish market has a good selection and the fish always looks top notch.

Dude Dogs-808-742-9438. I’m pulling for this restaurant because I like hot dogs and they serve about twenty different kinds here.  You can get a hot dog, bag of chips and soda for about six or seven bucks.  What’s not to like about that?  It’s a casual beach decor and would be a great place to take the kids if you’re in a hurry.

Lappert’s Ice Cream & Coffee-808-742-1272.  Lapperts moved here from their old location in Koloa Town.  The new location is much more upscale, compared to the plantation decor of the old shop.  Same great ice cream and coffee.

Living Foods Market & Cafe-808-742-2323.  Open at 7am for breakfast, they also serve lunch.  Seating is outdoors and you can order at the counter and take out.

Merriman’s Downstairs Cafe-808-742-8385.  This is the downstairs component of the upstairs fine dining Merrimans Fish House.  The Cafe did not have table service when it first opened and the menu was pricey.  They’ve adjusted and now serve wood fired oven baked pizzas plus a variety of other casual entrees.  Go during happy hour for half priced pizzas and reduced price drinks.

Savage Shrimp-808-742-9611.  This is what the name implies, a shrimp place.  From humble beginnings as a food truck, they’ve graduated to this great location. I haven’t tried it myself, however there always seems to be a crowd here.

Tortilla Republic Margarita Bar-808-742-8884.  If you like margaritas, don’t miss this place.  Many different kinds, all of them good.  The loaded nachos are also top notch and the guacamole, made by hand at your table, is not to be missed.  There is also a casual dining menu.

Uncle’s Shave Ice & Smoothies-808-742-2364.  The name says it all.

Da Crack-808-742-9595.  Just off the new traffic circle in Poipu Beach, look for the small strip center with the yellow submarine in front.  The center consists of two buildings with a covered sidewalk in between.  There was a Mexican restaurant here called Nortenos, but everyone called it “The Crack”, because it was no more than a take out window located in  the crack between these two buildings.  It went out of business and several years later new owners decided to open a new Mexican Restaurant and wisely named it “Da Crack”.  For those of you who don’t speak pigin, Da means The.  Good food, large portions and reasonable prices ensure there is normally a line a the window.  Take out only.  If you’d like a beer with your food, Kukuiula Market is right next door.

New Poipu Beach Fine Dining

Monday, May 13th, 2013

The Poipu Beach area, where Hideaway Cove is located, has always had a large concentration of restaurants.  Several years ago I would mention to potential guests that there were 10 restaurants within a mile of our property.  Although not all of the new locations are within a mile, they’re probably within two miles.  That’s because the majority of them are in the new Kukuiula Village Shopping Center.  Here’s a quick run down of what’s new on the fine dining front.

Kauai RestaurantJosselin Tapas Bar and Grill-808-742-7117.  Owned and operated by Jean Marie Josselin of Pacific Cafe fame, this is a fun, well decorated restaurant with a full bar.  Don’t miss the sangria, which is served on a cart that is wheeled to your table.

Merriman’s Fishhouse- 808-742-8385.  Merrimans became pretty famous on the Big Island as one of the first pioneers of the farm to table movement in the Hawaiian Islands.  Peter Merriman located his restaurant literally out in the middle of no where and it required a 45 minute drive from Kona to get there.  His Kauai location has struggled, changing from the original steakhouse (with locally sourced beef, of course) to the present fish house.  The decor is plantation style, you have any ocean view and the food is fabulous.  The only caveat is that the prices are high, even by Kauai standards.  We have foodie friends who come to Kauai twice a year and rave about their experience there.  See Casual Dining for the downstairs cafe.

Tortilla Republic Grill-808-742-8884.  Located upstairs from the Margarita Bar and open only for dinner.  This is not your traditional Mexican restaurant, with tacos, tamales, rice and beans.  The chef trained in New York and brought back with her a variety of recipes that are sure to delight anyone who likes good food.  Some of these tables also have ocean views.  Be sure and try one (or more) of the margaritas.

Donderos Restaurant in Poipu at Sunset

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Donderos is located at the Grand Hyatt Resort and Spa in Poipu Beach.  Although the majority of the restaurant is inside and air conditioned, if you call ahead in advance for reservations, ask for one of the few outdoor tables shown here.  You’ll have a view of the ocean as well as verdant landscaping of the Grand Hyatt.  This is a really romantic spot, especially if you get there in time to watch the sunset.

This is an upscale restaurant with prices to match and the food quality and service is first class.  If Jose is working the evening you dine, be sure and ask for one of his tables.  He is the best!  The cuisine is northern Italian and the restaurant recently added “small plates” that allow you to taste many of their wonderful offerings without ordering a full entre.

Donderos is located a short five minute drive from Hideaway Cove Villas Poipu Beach.  These seven air conditioned studio, one, two, three and five bedroom villas are located on a half acre of lush tropical landscaping a five minute walk from the white sands of Poipu Beach.
