$5 Million Gateway Project Underway:

Kauai County, in cooperation with the State and the Federal governments, is well underway in their efforts to beautify all roadways leading to and from Lihue Airport. Making use of a $4 million grant from the federal arena, along with projections of $1 million in volunteer labor, the project is scheduled to be wrapped up by May. The massive landscaping effort is mostly dependent upon 85 to 90 volunteer groups to help plant thousands of shrubs and ground-cover starts in a series of small plots. Each group will then re-visit their plot from time to time to weed and trim.

Visitor Statistics:

December 2000 visitors were up 6% over 1999. The domestic market provided 3.3% more visitors, the international market brought an increase of 19.3%. For the entire year, average length of stay also increased to just under 7 days. 53% of those coming from the western section of the U.S. stayed on Kauai only.

Heritage Trail Opens mid March:

The Koloa Heritage Trail, consisting of 13 sites in Koloa and Poipu opened in mid March, when brochures were completed. The trail is marked by lava-rock interpretive signs and further explained with a corresponding brochure.

Massive Poipu Beach Park Plan:

Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club has begun the first phase of their construction project on the site of the old Waiohai Hotel. Prior to demolition, they are removing mature landscaping to be reused later in the project. One of the conditions for their building permit was that they expend $800,000 in improvements at Poipu Beach Park. Included in the improvements will be expanded parking and improved access.

Tidbits:

  • In a recent survey of the healthiest places to live, Hawaii scored in the top five.  YEA!!
  • The 2000 census showed 56,000 contented people on Kauai out of 1,200,000 state wide.
  • A new branch of the Bank of Hawaii opened in the Poipu Shopping Village.  It joins the First Hawaiian Bank branch in Koloa.
  • The SS PATRIOT recently began sailing Hawaiian waters.  The 1200 passenger cruise ship will stop weekly on Kauai.
  • Kevin Costner's new film Dragonfly will begin filming shortly on Kauai.  Thanks to the efforts of our Kauai Film Commission, the island continues to increase in popularity as a film location.
  • Steve Case, President & CEO of AOL, recently made national news with his acquisition of Time Warner.  Here locally he purchased the 22,000 acre Grove Farm including the Kukui Grove Shopping Center, which is slated for a much overdue facelift.  Steve's father, who worked for Grove Farm before moving to Honolulu, will oversee the operation.  If anyone is interested, there is another 17,700 acres available from Amfac for $26 million.
  • If you are looking for Piatti's restaurant and don't find it, don't despair.  Piatti's changed the name to Plantation Gardens and the menu is now more Pacific Rim.  Still excellent food and ambiance.
  • Plans have been approved to double the size of the Poipu Village Shopping Center.  Along with the much needed addition of 400 parking stalls, Roy's Restaurant will expand and relocate, a large grocery store will be added plus several new restaurants.

  • A new villa, the Sea Breeze Villa, will join the Hideaway Cove family on July 1st.  It’s a very spacious, upscale, 1570 square foot two bedroom, two baths Villa with full kitchen and a private spa on the lanai. Grand opening price to be $135 per night.
  • Kyle Oshima, who did the excellent landscaping at the front of the villas, has just about completed landscaping behind the villas. Many of the existing stones (of which there are many in Poipu) were used to build a rock wall that meanders lazily the full length of the property. Red flame ginger, ground cover, ferns, shrubs and lawn complete the picture. In the not too distant future we’ll post pictures on our website.
  • To make your dining choices easier, we’ve put together a large book for each Villa with menus from many of the restaurants on Kauai.
  • We have added four "beach cruiser" bicycles for your enjoyment during your stay at Hideaway Cove. Use them to ride down to the beach or to the nearby Poipu Village restaurants, shops and grocery store.
  • We now offer personalized service for your snorkel gear at unbeatable prices. Just email us your shoe size(s) and your gear will be waiting at your Villa when you check in. Gear includes silicone mask with purge snorkel, fins, fish card and no fog goop, all in a mesh carry all bag. The rental is just $20.00 per week, about half what the other companies charge. We also offer a "combo package" of snorkel gear, smooth bottom boogie board and underwater camera for $40.00 per week.

The following ideas about science were obtained from essays, exams and classroom discussions of 5th and 6th graders. They illustrate Mark Twain's contention that the 'most interesting information comes from children, for they tell all they know and then stop.'
  • A fossil is an extinct animal. The older it is, the more extinct it is.
  • A vibration is a motion that cannot make up its mind which way it wants to go.
  • In spring, the salmon swim upstream to spoon.
  • Marie Curie did her research at the Sore Buns Institute in France.
  • One on the main causes of dust is janitors.
  • Rhubarb: A kind of celery gone bloodshot.
  • Some people can tell what time it is by looking at the sun. But I have never been able to make out the numbers.
  • The four seasons are salt, pepper, mustard and vinegar.
  • The general direction of the Alps is straight up.
  • To keep milk from turning sour: Keep it in the cow.
  • Vacuum: A large, empty space where the pope lives.
  • Wind is like the air, only pushier.
  • Humidity is the experience of looking for air and finding water.
  • Three kinds of blood vessels are arteries, vanes and caterpillars.
  • Mushrooms always grow in damp places so they look like umbrellas.

Thank you for your numerous answers to our survey question last issue.  We wanted to know whether to add a swimming pool or individual spas and the answer came back (overwhelmingly) individual spas.

Thanks for your input!
