  • New Airline Service Announced

American Airlines begins its daily service from Los Angeles to Lihue on June 15th.  Also Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays is beginning weekly flights on June 1st from both San Francisco and Los Angeles to Lihue.

More air service to Hawaii from the West Coast was also announced by Hawaiian Airlines. Targeting summer traffic, Hawaiian will be launching direct Honolulu service from Sacramento and Ontario, California on June 7th using Boeing 767-300ER extended range aircraft.  The airline is also opening up the Phoenix, Arizona market by launching non-stop service to Honolulu in October, using 767 aircraft as well.

Aloha Airlines has followed suit with the recent announcement of direct Honolulu service, starting June 1st from Burbank, California and June 15th from Vancouver, British Columbia.  Aloha will be using new Boeing 737-700 long range air craft.

For those of you in Colorado, United Airlines is now offering direct flights from Denver to Honolulu.

New Disney Film Set on Kauai

The HVCB along with the Kauai Visitors Bureau are looking at innovative ways to support Disney's planned summer blockbuster film, "Lilo and Stitch", an animated story based on Kauai.  The film promises to bring national and international attention to Hawaii and Kauai.  HVCB is looking at a $2 to $3 million commitment over the course of three years to support Hawaii presence in the film's promotion.

Bruce Willis and Kevin Costner on Kauai

Bruce Willis is currently on Kauai shooting his new film “Man of War”.  This $70 million movie will be filming on island through August.  The casting director lost a wonderful opportunity when she failed to choose either Gale or myself as extras.  Kevin Costner's film Dragonfly, also filmed on Kauai, opened in February.

    Kahili Award Received

The Poipu Beach Foundation received top honors recently in the "Keep It Hawaii" Kahili Awards presentation.  With only 16 Kahili awards given among 136 entries, the honor was given to the Foundation in the Historical Category for the Koloa Heritage Trail project.  Brochures about the trail are in all Hideaway Cove Villas.

    Hawaii Economy Strong

Economic forecaster predict a 1.3% growth in Hawaii's economy this year, as well as a 3.5% increase in visitor arrivals, with neighbor island travel leading the way.  YEA KAUAI!

    Who Does These Studies, Anyway?

A recent study of islands around the world concluded that Kauai, while not being perfect (who is?) is close to perfect.  The reasons given were our emphasis on agriculture (one sugar cane producer remaining and lots of coffee), controlled growth (no buildings higher than a coconut tree - no kidding), general cleanliness (just try and find any rubbish along the road and absolutely no billboards) and its friendly people.

    Taste of Hawaii
Mark your calendars for June 2nd.  That's the date of the annual Taste of Hawaii Rotary Benefit featuring the top 50 chefs in Hawaii.  Gates open at Smiths Tropical Paradise at noon.  This event has grown so large that it is now hard to visit all the food booths, taste all the wine and beer and listen to all the different entertainment in four or five hours.  This really is an event not to be missed if you are on island.  For info call 808-245-8270

Phase one of the landscaping design project by Kauai landscape architect Maureen Murphy has been completed.  A new winding sidewalk has been poured between the two buildings and includes a new entrance to the Beachcomber Villa featuring a covered lanai.  The concrete was stamped with the leaves of some of the larger plants on property and is a visual delight.

Nineteen new palm trees were added and two of our large royal palms are now in new locations.  In addition, hundreds of new plants have been added everywhere on the property.  An entirely new irrigation system was installed by Kyle Oshima, with new timers, valves, pop up sprinkler heads and drip lines.  Kyle and his crew are also responsible for maintaining the property in its wonderful condition.

Phase two will include completion of a parking area in front of the new 2307 building, a winding sidewalk down the left hand side of the property, new entrances to the Coral and Dolphin Villas and a widening of the main driveway that goes up to the 2315 building.  (This will be especially welcome to our returning guests who had to back down the old driveway at night. YIKES!)

Additional planting will be done in the front, side and rear of the property and a small water feature added in back.  Last but not least an entirely new landscape lighting system from Kilohana Lighting here on Kauai will be added with path lights and up lights.

We're in the process of taking new pictures, which should be posted to the web site in another 30 days.  We will also be including photos of the new Beachcomber Villa, whose first guest Leslie from Dallas, Texas just raved about her accommodations.  The long delayed Royal Palm Villa should be ready for occupancy in another two weeks and we'll post photos of it as well.

We'll give you another update in our next issue of FYI in June/July.  We anticipate that the entire project will be completed in time for Holiday Season beginning December 15th.

    The Wisdom of Youth

A group of students were asked to list what they thought were the present Seven Wonders of the World. Though there was some disagreement, the following got the most votes:

    1. Egypt's Great Pyramids
    2. Taj Mahal
    3. Grand Canyon
    4. Panama Canal
    5. Empire State Building
    6. St. Peter's Basilica
    7. China's Great Wall
While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one quiet student hadn't turned in her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The girl replied, "Yes, a little. I couldn't quite make up my mind because there were so many." The teacher said, "Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help." The girl hesitated, then read, "I think the Seven Wonders of the World are:
    1. to touch
    2. to taste
    3. to see
    4. to hear

She hesitated a little, and then added,

    5. to feel
    6. to laugh
    7. and to love

The room was so full of silence you could have heard a pin drop.

Those things we overlook as simple and "ordinary" are truly wondrous.
