  • Exotic Yet Familiar Appeal of Islands Cited By Experts

Some of the reasons cited for Hawaii's popularity this year:  It's an exotic yet familiar domestic destination that offers stressed workers and families a chance to lounge on the beach.  With post-Sept. 11 jitters about world travel and the economic dislocations of the past couple of years, those are powerful appeals.

Airlines, betting heavily on more visitors, are adding 490,000 seats to the Hawaiian Islands from the Mainland this summer.  That amounts to 10% more than last year and 3 percent more than 2000, a record year for Hawaii visitors.

67% in U.S. Planning To Vacation This Summer

American tourism is expected to surge this summer, partly because terrorism fears have created a reluctance to travel overseas.  But to what degree will travelers turn to the Internet versus offline sources to make their travel plans?  Four in ten will go online, a survey conducted by Harris Interactive found.  The poll, commissioned by Trip.com found that 24 percent of travelers said they'll visit loved ones, while 70% plan to simply relax.

New Plans For Alexander and Baldwin's (A&B) Poipu Land

While specific details and lay-out are still on the drawing board, DMB Associates, the joint venture partner for A & B has indicated that they're looking at a completely revised plan for the 1,000 acres known as Kukuiula Development.  Substantial reduction of density along with expanding golf and recreational opportunities are just some of the proposals on the table as well as the building of a hotel/timeshare complex across from Kukuiula Harbor.  (Does the name of the development company make more sense now)?

Previously A&B offered raw land parcels at a new development called Koloa Estates.  Half acre parcels started in the $150,000 range.  Phase Two of Koloa Estates should go on sale by the end of this year.  No word yet on pricing.

Poipu Beach Parking Lot to Re-Open, Park to Follow

The Marriott Waiohai reports that all is on schedule for opening the new Poipu Beach Park parking lot by July 1st.  This is the parking lot and park that is on your right after you turn off Poipu road to come down to Poipu Beach. Landscaping of  the park (Mano Kalanipo)  will still be underway into July.  The $800,000 project is being paid for by the Marriott Waiohai as part of their County building permit conditions.

I drive by this project every time I go to Hideaway Cove, which lately has been daily.  This is a large hand lettered wooden sign that says construction started on May 3rd and will be completed by June 1st.  The 1st has been crossed out and June 7th put in its place.  I guess no one felt brave enough to cross that out and put July 1st.  Whenever it's completed, it will be a welcome addition to the Poipu Beach area, providing lots of additional paved parking plus the refurbishment of a park that had become a little run down.  Thank you Marriott and thank you County of Kauai for making this a condition of the Marriott building permit.

At long last the new photos of the remodeled Beachcomber Studio Villa and Royal Palm Two Bedroom Villa are posted on our website.  You can see them by clicking on www.hideawaycove.com and then on the Villas & Rates button on the left and then on the individual photos in the chart to go to a separate page for each Villa.

The landscape lighting project is almost complete and really looks great.  I saw the lights for the first time at night and it made me want to get a room (just kidding).  The spot lights (referred to in the lighting business as "up lights") on the palm trees are very dramatic.  I am planning to get some night photos to post on the website within the next 30 days.  I'll most likely wait until the front parking for the 2307 building has been completed and shoot photos of both at the same time.  Will keep you posted.

    Lipstick at School

According to a news report, a certain private school in Washington recently was faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints. Every night, the maintenance man would remove them and the next day, the girls would put them back. Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night. To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror. There are teachers, and then there are educators...

    Condos on Kauai

It would be more accurate to say condos on the south shore of Kauai.  Here are two of the most affordable condos and two at the other end of the price spectrum.

    Kiahuna Plantation
This complex is located on Poipu Road where it intersects the road that goes to Spouting Horn (Lawai Road).  You could say Kiahuna is behind the big lava rock wall with the words “Poipu” and “Spouting Horn” on it.  All units in this complex are lease hold and this one bedroom, one bath is on the market for $129,000.  It's fully furnished, although it doesn't take much to fill up 640 square feet.

    Murphy Sleeps Here
This “Beach Bungalow” is on the ground floor of the Prince Kuhio complex, located adjacent to Lawai Beach Resort and across the street from the Beach House Restaurant. A fully furnished 339 square foot studio with Murphy Bed, it has ocean view, as do most all the units at Prince Kuhio.  The asking price is $149,000.

    Location, Location, Location
These are the three most important factors to consider in purchasing real estate.  This property, for example, is lease hold, just like our first one offered above at $129,000.  It has a little less square footage (620) than the Kiahuna Plantation and also comes fully furnished.  The difference is that this single story end unit is located practically right on the sand in Poipu.  Oh, and the asking price is $750,000.

    Live Like Royalty
You can't get much closer to the ocean on the south shore than Whaler's Cove.  Many of these condos have doubled in value in the past ten years.  This fee simple 1231 square foot two bedroom, two and a half bath is located on the third floor with a forever ocean view.  Make it yours for only $1,175,000.  This is actually a good value, as currently there are two other listings in Whalers Cove, both two bedrooms, two baths.  One is priced at $1.3 million and the other at $1.6 million.
