Travel+Leisure: Kauai Best in Hawaii Travel + Leisure magazine is ranking Kauai as the best island in Hawaii in its eighth annual World's Best Awards Reader Survey for 2003. Kauai received a score of 86.2 in the "World's Best Islands Hawaii" category, giving us the top spot on the list.
Kauai also ranked number five in the Top 10 Overall category for the World's Best Islands. The awards are determined by compiling the results of questionnaires mailed to the magazine's subscribers. In ranking islands, subscribers were asked to rate on five characteristics. Respondents reported where they had traveled worldwide and how, and rated only the attributes that were relevant to recent travel.
Sue Kanoho, executive director of the Kauai Visitors Bureau was thrilled with the award. She commented that "Receiving such high praise from some of the world's most savvy travelers only confirms that Kauai excels as a visitor destination that offers something for everyone." We couldn't agree more Sue.
A&B Purchasing Kauai Lagoons Large Kauai landowner Alexander and Baldwin has purchased the golf course known locally as Kauai Lagoons. Also included with the purchase here on Kauai is a 30 acre hotel site and about 710 acres of land along the coast between Lihue Airport's main runway and Nawiliwili. A company spokesperson said it was too early to say if the company will develop a hotel on the site. They will have more definitive information by the time the transaction closes in October.
Alexander and Baldwin's subsidiary South Maui Development purchased the property as part of a deal worth $135 million that also includes a golf course and about 270 acres of resort land at Wailea in Maui. A&B's land holdings in Hawaii now total over 90,000 acres. The company also owns Matson Navigation Co. which brings mainland cargo to Kauai and the 4,000 acre Kauai Coffee Company at Numila, the largest coffee plantation in the United States.
The Kauai Lagoons Golf Club is home to two Jack Nicklaus designed golf courses, the Oceanside Kiele Course and the Scottish links-style Mokihana Course. A golf club house with a dining area and pro shop are part of the golf course.
Visitor/Activity Center to be Developed
A new business being developed at Kauai Lagoons is the Activity Center owned by True Blue, Inc., the company that runs the beach activities concession adjacent to Duke's Restaurant at Kalapaki Bay. Plans call for the Activity Center to occupy a building near the main parking lot at Kauai Lagoons. The company is refurbishing the flat-water torpedo-style motor boats that developer Chris Hemmeter used for "jungle" tours around islands stocked with exotic wildlife.
True Blue plans to eventually provide boat tours of the lagoon, rent paddle boats and kayaks and have a bike rental and tour service. Their workers are landscaping one of the islands in the lagoon, which is to be renamed "Hula Island" with plans to hold hula shows, with visitors being transported to the island aboard the lagoon boats.

It is important that a man helps you around the house and has a job.
It is important that a man makes you laugh.
It is important to find a man you can count on and doesn't lie to you.
It is important that a man is good in bed and loves making love to you.
It is really important that these four men don't know each other.
Who Designed The Human Body?
Three engineering students were gathered together discussing the possible designers of the human body.
One said, "It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints."
Another said, "No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous system has many thousands of electrical connections."
The last said, "Actually it was a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline through a recreational area?"
Reflections on Life
Food has replaced sex in my life ... now I can't even get into my own pants!
The closest I ever got to a 4.0 in school was my blood-alcohol content.
Marriage changes passion ... suddenly you're in bed with a relative.
I saw a woman wearing a sweat shirt with "Guess" on it ... so I said, "Implants?"
I don't do drugs anymore 'cause I find I get the same effect just standing up fast.
I have my own little world. But it's OK ... they know me here.
I got a sweater for Christmas ... I really wanted a screamer or a moaner.
I don't approve of political jokes ... I've seen too many of them get elected.
I love being married. It's so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life.
Shopping tip: You can get shoes for $1.50 at the bowling alley.
I married my wife for her looks ... but not the ones she's been giving me lately!
Everyday I beat my own previous record for number of consecutive days I've stayed alive.
How come we choose from just two people to run for President and 50 for Miss America?
Why is it that most nudists are people you don't want to see naked?
Every time I walk into a singles bar I can hear Mom's wise words: "Don't pick that up, you don't know where it's been!"
Snowmen fall from Heaven unassembled.
Two Cows
Two cows were standing next to each other in a field. One cow said, "I was artificially inseminated this morning." The other said "I don't believe you." The first cow said, It's true. No bull."
You're Cured
One afternoon a mother was lecturing her daughter, "I don't like this guy you are going out with. He just looks so dumb!"
"No Momma," the daughter replied, "You've got it all wrong. My Ralphie is going to be a doctor some day."
"A medical doctor?" the mother replies, completely taken by surprise.
"Yes, and in fact he has already cured me of that bleeding illness that I used to have every month."
Escaped Prisoner
A man escapes from a prison where he had been kept for 15 years. As he runs away, he finds a house and breaks into it, looking for money and guns, but only finds a young couple in bed.
He orders the guy out of bed and ties him up in a chair. While tying the girl up to the bed, he gets on top of her, kisses her on the neck, then gets up, and goes to the bathroom.
While he's in there, the husband tells his wife, "Listen, this guy is an escaped prisoner, look at his clothes! He probably spent lots of time in jail, and hasn't seen a woman in years.
I saw how he kissed your neck. If he wants sex, don't resist, don't complain, just do what he tells you, just give him satisfaction. This guy must be dangerous, if he gets angry, he'll kill us both. Be strong, honey. I love you."
To which the wife responds, "He was not kissing my neck. He was whispering in my ear. He told me he was gay, thought you were cute, and asked if we kept any Vaseline in the bathroom.
Be strong, honey, I love you, too."
Meeting the Family
A young Irish lad had fallen in love with a girl and felt the relationship had gone far enough to take her home to meet his family.
So, one fine Sunday evening the lad, his lady friend and the rest of the family (17 or so people) were gathered around the dining room table.
The matriarch or the family asked the girlfriend, "So, tell me, lass, what is your occupation?"
The girl hesitated then said, "Well, Mrs. O'Malley, I'm a prostitute."
Immediately the lad's mother fainted and was surrounded by a dozen family members who splashed her face with water. Finally, she regained consciousness, returned to her seat. Soon, the family calmed down and resumed the meal.
At that point, the mother asked again, "Forgive me, dearie. I don't think I heard you correctly.... what did you say your occupation was?"
Again the girl answered, "Mrs. O'Malley, I'm a prostitute."
The mother laughed and said, "Oh thank goodness, dearie, for a moment there I thought you said you were a Protestant!"
The summer months are always very busy and this year is no exception. We'll be doing our quarterly trimming of the Coconut trees and the Royal Palms, the quarterly spraying to keep Kauai's little creatures outside, the quarterly window washing and the quarterly deep cleaning of each Villa. The deep clean is where we rotate the mattresses, move all furniture and dust behind it, do all ceiling fans, steam clean carpets and furniture and take care of everything else that isn't done with our weekly cleanings. I've also sanded and sealed the Seabreeze deck and the Aloha and Royal Palm decks will be next. Also this week all stairs get painted with a special non-slip paint and the railings will be painted.
Congratulations to Dave and Jane Leonard from Skillman, New Jersey for winning a $300 credit toward a future stay at Hideaway Cove. Good luck to everyone for our next drawing. The winner will be announced in our next issue.
