KIAHUNA SWIM AND TENNIS CLUB RE-OPENS

Following a $750,000 renovation, the Kiahuna Swim and Tennis Club has re-opened. The best news of all is that a fabulous new restaurant, Casablanca, has opened in the space once occupied by Joe's On The Green before they moved to the golf course. The former square footage has been doubled and a full bar added and the menu is to die for. There is a tapas menu for lighter fare and a full dinner menu as well.

In addition to a terrific dining experience, you can also play tennis to your hearts content. Day use of the tennis courts runs $10 per person. Tennis clinics are also offered on Monday , Wednesday and Friday for $12 per hour for adults and $10 an hour for juniors. Weekly round-robin events are scheduled for the facility as well, with the public invited to participate. Womens's round-robin doubles are on Tuesday at 9am, mixed doubles are on Wednesday at 0am and men's doubles are on Thursday; also at 9am. The Swim and Tennis Club is open daily form 8am to 5pm. Call 808-742-9533 for more information.

VISITOR STATISTICS

Year to date Kauai continues ahead of last year in visitor traffic. Total domestic arrivals for the first three quarters of 2003 are up 2.6%. Comparing those numbers to the neighbor islands, Oahu was down 1.5% for the same time period. The Big Island showed the same gain as Kauai, up 2.6%, while Maui leads the islands so far this year with a 6.9% gain over last year.

Also showing strength, the average length of stay on Kauai for the first nine months has risen 3.1% to 7.82 days. More is better for this number and it is terrific to see our average visitor spending more than a full week on Kauai.

Another upbeat note is the increase in Japanese travelers that stayed only on Kauai. Traditionally, the majority of Japanese tourists travel to Oahu. Since 9/11 they have stayed away in droves, resulting in a severe drop in overall tourism on Oahu. So it comes as a very pleasant surprise that the Kauai-only visitor from Japan in September of this year jumped a whopping 274% from last year. Domo arigato.
