Around the Island     Kauai Coming Events     Year Round Things To Do     A Little Bit of Laughter..
Real Estate Corner     What's Happening at Hideaway Cove     And the Winner Is ..

Big news at Hideaway on a number of fronts. The guest laundry room for the 2307 building has now been completed. If you're on property you'll have to stop by and take a look. You'll also be amazed these Maytag washers. You almost can't hear them running. So now Lisa in housekeeping has her own locked storage area with it's own washer and dryer and guests will now have a total of three washers and dryers on property.

We also completed our snorkel storage gear storage area, complete with a new sidewalk. Having the gear on property means we can now fulfill last minute requests. So now, when you don't order your gear in advance, then go to Snorkel Bob or the nearby surf shop and discover we really were the lowest prices, you can go into the office and get your gear.

What's that you say, the office? Could it be that the long awaited and much anticipated office has finally been completed? Well yes and no. We do have an office with two beautiful desks, computers a printer and a bathroom. What we don't have yet are cabinets for the sink, microwave and storage or the cabinet that the printer./fax machine sits on. So it's a little like camping for now. I guess this is what you call a soft opening. We are open from 8:30am to 3:30pm and have already been able to help lots of guests with everything under the sun, including their activity needs. Final completion probably won't be until the end of February, given how difficult it is to schedule anyone in the trades.

And Hideaway Cove is now a Hot Spot with our wireless system now installed. The cable company told us we'd have to test everything and might need some additional hardware to "boost" the signal strength. Initial tests show that to be true, so we've ordered a repeater over the internet and that should be installed in early Feb. Several guests that brought laptops have reported the system works great.

A word of caution for our mainland guests who have not experienced internet connections here on Kauai. They just don't work like the mainland, so before you pull out your hair and wonder why your connection just got dropped, it's most likely the internet service provider, Road Runner, experiencing problems with their system. Or it could be a power outage.

In the past four months we have had two power outages that took down the entire island, the last time for a full hour and a half. And as anyone knows from owing a personal computer at home, when you turn off power in the middle of an operation, you need to plug and unplug everything (sometimes several times) to get it working properly again. Same thing when an island's power is shut down without warning.

The good news is that eventually everything works again!
