Costco is Coming
I know, I know, you're saying what's the big deal, right? Everyone has a Costco near them, right? Well, in spite of the fact that there are currently five Costcos in the Hawaiian Islands, we are the only island that doesn't have one. That will change this fall when Costco plans to open on 13 acres purchased from Grove Farm. The location is in Kukui Grove Center, right across the parking lot from Home Depot, our other big box retailer. Some, I'm sure, will lament the perceived loss of our laid back island lifestyle. Personally, I will enjoy not having to fly to Honolulu once or twice a year to purchase items that just aren't available now on Kauai.
Although the store will be smaller than many mainland stores at 150,000 square feet, it will include a bakery, a rotisserie, a slicing delicatessen, a produce cooler, wall freezers, a photography center, a food court, and a sales area for tires and the installation of tires. A separate 1.5 acre plot of land will be used for a self serve gasoline facility. The 16 pump self-service gas station will sell gas to Costco members at discounted prices. This will be an especially welcome addition, as local retailers currently sell regular gas for $2.35 a gallon. The project also will add 200 full and part time jobs to the Kauai workforce.
The Police Blotter
This is a reprint of an article in our 2001 FYI concerning the police blotter. Each week our Garden Island Newspaper publishes a section called The Police Blotter and four years ago it was quite entertaining. These days it just lists the drunk drivers and other sundry run of the mill offenses. Ah for the good old days, when pet chickens were of interest.
