 Move Toward Ethanol
Governor Linda Lingle recently delineated rules which allow for the start of an ethanol industry in Hawaii. By April, 2006, it is mandated that 85% of Hawaii's gasoline will contain 10% ethanol. Gay and Robinson is working with the Worldwide Energy Group to produce ethanol from bagasse (a byproduct of sugar can production). The bulk of Oahu's production will come from recycling of plastics, paper, and food products.
Highway and Airport Improvements
The Hawaii State Department of Transportation revealed plans to spend $315 mission on airport and highway improvements. The highway work would include widening the highway to four lanes from Puhi to Kipu, as well as creating a 10 mile road from Hanamaulu to Kapaa stream. The airport project would see improvements to the air cargo area, the extension of aprons, and improvements to the maintenance baseyard.
Salt Pond Park
Mayor Brian Baptiste envisions the expansion of Salt Pond Park to include 150 acres of the Hanapepe peninsula. The added land would unify the Beach Park with the adjoining Stadium complex.
