Lihue AirportBusy Airport This Summer
Throughout July and August, Lihue Airport will see 48 direct flights weekly, along with boosted inter-island service by Aloha Airline, Hawaiian Airlines and the new Island Air (formerly a part of Aloha). According to TSA Customer Support Manager, Gini Kapali, airport check in lines are being delayed by overweight baggage. If visitors will weigh their bags before arriving at the airport and make appropriate changes, delays can be avoided. Direct flights into Kauai usually limit baggage to 50 pounds per item, and each person is allowed two checked in items.

In addition, each passenger is allowed two carry on items, consisting of a purse and approved size carry on for women and a briefcase and approved carry on for men. If you don't already have the full number of baggage pieces, it's wise to carry a collapsible nylon bag with you. That way if you are over your weight allowance, you can transfer items to your nylon bag and carry them on.

Internet Usage Up for Kauai Travel Bookings
According to the Travel Industry Association of American (TIA), 67% of Internet users who travel (over 64 million people) used the Internet in 2003 to find information on destinations. Of these, 42.2 million booked their travel arrangements online, an 8% increase over 2002, showing that booking behavior follows data gathering. In other words, learning about a destination is a precursor and motivator to booking that destination. 29% of online bookers arranged 100% of their travel plans, including activities, in 2003 compared to 23% in 2002. In other words, 29% made no post-arrival travel plans. The trend has grown steadily since TIA started their survey in 1997.

Poipu Beach Survey
Initial results of the annual Poipu Beach Resort Association survey show that 34% of respondents came from California, followed by Colorado with 5.6%. 53% of those polled stayed only on Kauai. Honeymooners accounted for 15%; booking through a travel agency was done by 37%; 96% would return to Poipu for a future vacation; 49% were between the ages of 45 and 65 years of age; 76% had college degrees and 40% had household incomes of $125,000 or more.
