Anatomy of a new stove top.
Sometimes a very simple task, like replacing a stove top consumes way more time than one would imagine. Here's what happened when I set out to replace the cook top in our Oceanview Villa with a new ceramic one.

Day One-What a sense of accomplishment I'm going to feel. Drive down to Home Depot and go into the stove top section. Look at various stove tops for a half hour. Realize that I don't have the measurements to select the correct top. Oceanview is now occupied for next 14 days.

Day Fifteen-Go into Oceanview Villa and remove existing cook top. Measure opening in the granite. Return to Home Depot. Spend one hour selecting "perfect" ceramic stove top. Spend 15 minutes waiting for salesperson. Salesperson (new to the department) spends 30 minutes finding cook top in catalog. Salesperson goes into computer system and informs me the cook top I've selected is not in stock. It turns out the only cook top that is in stock is one sale. I purchase that cook top.

Day Eighteen-Meet electrician to install cook top. Unpack cook top from box. It does not fit, in spite of measurements that say it should. Apologize to electrician. No problem, he will bill for his time anyway. Granite opening is ? inch too small. No time to return cook top today.

Day Twenty-Return cook top to Home Depot. Order cook top I originally wanted. Delivery time is six to eight weeks. They say they will call me when it comes in.

Day Seventy- While shopping in Home Depot for other items, realize it's been a while since I order stove top. Go to the appliance section. Not only is the stove there, it's been there for two weeks (they forgot to call). Take stove top home. Oceanview is booked for an entire month. Call granite guy to arrange to have him cut opening to fit new stove top.

Day One Hundred-Call granite guy to remind him of upcoming appointment to cut grantie. He says "no problem".

Day One Hundred Six-Granite guy has said he will call me in the afternoon to confirm what time he will arrive. Go to Oceanview at 1pm. Unpack new stove top. Do not take out old stove top just in case granite guy doesn't show ukp. Wait until 3pm. Call granite guy. No answer. Leave message on his voice mail. Wait until 5pm. Call granite guy again and leave another message. Leave Oceanview at 5:45pm. Pass granite guy on the road. He apologizes. I'm running late, so tell him to just go ahead and cut the countertop. He leaves message later that evening that counter is cut and new stove top installed.

Day One Hundred Seven-Return to Oceanview to check things out. New top installed, looks good. Old top left sitting on Oriental carpet seems to be oozing some substance. Carry old top downstairs. Use rug shampoo on Oriental carpet. Call electrician to make appointment to wire up new cook top. Only four days remain until new guests check into Oceanview.

Day One Hundred Ten-Electrician arrives on time, wires up stove top and it works beautifully. Guests check in tomorrow.

So what's the big deal with installing a new cook top that it takes four months to accomplish?
Let me tell you ….:-)
