New Dates for PGA Grand Slam will be November 22-24
Originally scheduled for December 2-4, the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at Poipu Bay Resort has shifted to November 22- 24 to accommodate players' schedules.
This year's players include Retiff Goosen of South Africa, winner of the US Open; Todd Hamilton, an American and winner of the British Open; Phil Mickelson, also an American and winner of the Masters; and Vijay Singh of Fiji, winner of the PGA Championship.
November 22nd will be the Pro-Am, with November 23rd and 24th featuring 18 hole-play. Ticket sales are limited to 6,000. For more information about the schedule change, contact 800-742-8258. For tickets, the number to call is 800-PGA-TCKT.
Update on the Poipu Beach Hotel
Following approval by the Kauai County Planning Commission of the Poipu Beach Hotel's SMA permit and variance applications, the Poipu Beach Hotel's owner, CTF, has indicated their desire to move full speed ahead on the project.
According to their representative, Mike Belles, the owner would like to see the property re-opened by 2006. A management company has not yet been named. The hotel design is similar to the former property with 121 rooms, a full-service restaurant, plus pool and hot tub.
When the project is completed, it will be the last of the hotels in Poipu to be repaired or rebuilt after Hurricane Iniki. Island wide, the only other major Hotel remaining to be repaired is the Coco Palms in Kapaa.
Monk Seal Volunteer Training Sessions
The Monk Seal Volunteer Watch organization is offering training sessions both at Poipu Beach Park and at the area's major hotels. For more information call Jean Souza, 651-1457.
Mahalo to the Hyatt, Sheraton and Waiohai for setting up training rooms, as well as to NOAA and the Volunteer Watch Program for providing training services. NOAA has also been working in cooperation with Kauai County to keep limited swimming access open at Poipu Beach Park and to provide Monk Seal information to the public.
If all goes according to plan, the Monk Seal mother and pup pairs at Poipu Beach Park and at Mahaulepu will be moving out to sea by mid-September.
Airline News
Aloha Airlines is adding a second daily Honolulu to Reno flight via Burbank. The existing service flies through Orange County. Flights will arrive in Reno at 11:10 p.m. and leave in the morning from Reno at 7:10 a.m. The new service will launch December 15th.
Beginning November 12th, Vancouver-based Harmony Airways will expand its winter schedule with more flights between Canada and Hawaii. This new service will include nonstop flights to Honolulu from Victoria and Toronto in addition to their Vancouver flights.
Aloha, American and United Airlines will all discontinue one daily flight to Kauai after Labor Day. United's evening San Francisco departure will be scheduled only on Saturdays. Their mid-day departure to SFO and evening departure to LAX will remain in place. Aloha's daily Oakland service will discontinue. American's afternoon departure to LAX will also be discontinued, but their evening departure will remain in place.
Visitor Statistics Strong in July
Kauai visitor arrivals in July increased by almost 10% compared to last year. Those from the international market surged 17% and from the domestic market by 9%. By comparison: Maui was up 6.1%; the Big Island up by 6%; and Oahu up by 13.4%.
Visitors to Kauai from U.S. West were ahead by 4.5%, with the Kauai-only visitor from that segment up by 10.1%. From U.S. East, visitor arrivals climbed 15.9% with the Kauai-only number up by 26.5%.
Cruise ship visitors, at 14,471 passengers in July increased by 47.3% over the previous July. Scheduled airline seats to Lihue were up by 22.1%, the biggest increase of any island.
Year-to-date, total visitor arrivals to Kauai are running 4% ahead of last year, which would put Kauai slightly over the million visitor mark by the end of December. The length-of-stay for domestic visitors is up 3.6% to 7.22 days.
